Local Landmarks

Newbold Verdon is a small town and civil parish nestled between Barlestone and Desford, lying around nine and a half miles west of Leicester.

The name goes back to the Domesday Book of 1086, when the settlement was recorded as Niwebold, meaning newly built. It later took the Verdon suffix from Nicholas de Verdon, who held the manor from 1226. For centuries afterwards the town was mostly a farming settlement, until coal mining expanded here in the 1850s. The pits have long since closed, and Newbold Verdon now works as a commuter town, with many people travelling into Leicester or Hinckley for work.

The oldest reminders of that history are still standing. A prime example being Newbold Verdon Hall, a Grade I listed former country house built around 1700 for the Bishop of Durham on Main Street. Equally, Cob Cottage on the same street dates as far back as 1650 and is thought to be the oldest home in the town.

Life in Newbold Verdon has a slower pace than nearby Hinckley or Leicester, with Main Street forming the centre for shopping, a doctor’s surgery and a scattering of pubs. Housing ranges from older cottages and terraces close to the centre, through 1930s and post-war semis on estates like Arnolds Crescent and Peters Avenue, to newer homes built on the edges of the area.

Families make up a large part of the population, drawn by the primary school, the playing fields and open countryside close by. Newbold Verdon lies close to Barlestone and Desford, both of which Fox Country Properties also covers, and its position between Leicester’s job market and open Leicestershire countryside continues to draw buyers who want extra space without giving up a manageable commute.

Getting around Newbold Verdon is easy, with several options available if you’d like to travel further afield.

  • Car & road: Newbold Verdon sits on the B582 between Barlestone and Desford, with the B585 running out towards Market Bosworth. The M1 lies around three miles to the north-east and the M69 around five miles to the south, putting Leicester, Coventry and Nuneaton within reasonable reach by car.
  • Bus: Bus services run between Market Bosworth and Leicester, stopping in the town and taking around 40 minutes into the city centre. Other services link Newbold Verdon with Coalville, Ibstock, Market Bosworth and Hinckley.
  • Train: there’s no station in the town itself. The nearest mainline station is Hinckley, around eight and a half miles south, with hourly services to Leicester and Birmingham New Street.
  • Cycling & walking: quiet lanes and footpaths connect Newbold Verdon to Barlestone, Desford and the wider Leicestershire countryside, including routes towards the Bosworth Battlefield trails.

The nearest airport is East Midlands Airport, around 17 miles away and roughly 30 to 35 minutes’ drive.

The road and bus options make Newbold Verdon a reasonable option for commuters, which continues to support steady buyer demand from people working in Leicester, Hinckley and Coventry.

For anyone weighing up Newbold Verdon as a place to live, the property types here vary as much by decade as by street.

Architecture: Newbold Verdon’s housing spans several periods, from Cob Cottage, the oldest surviving home dating to 1650, through Victorian terraces built during the coal mining expansion of the 1850s, to 1930s and post-war semis on estates such as Arnolds Crescent and Peters Avenue, and a growing number of new-build homes on the edges of the town.

Listed property is limited chiefly to a handful of buildings including Newbold Verdon Hall.

Developments: Hinckley and Bosworth’s planning committee recommended approval for a further application for up to 200 properties in Newbold Verdon in January 2026, alongside a small shop and around half a hectare of school playing fields.

Separately, developments are underway for up to 239 homes on land east of the Windmill Inn on Brascote Lane.

Everyday life in Newbold Verdon centres on Main Street, with most practical needs covered close to home.

  1. Shopping: Main Street is home to a Co-op supermarket, along with a small number of independent shops – including a bakery, fish & chip shop, coffee shop and more. For a wider choice, Hinckley’s town centre and Fosse Park near Leicester are both a short drive away.
  2. Eating & Drinking: the town has two long-standing pubs: the Jubilee Inn , and the Windmill Inn out at Brascote, which stands on the site of a medieval settlement.
  3. Leisure & Recreation: Newbold Verdon Primary School‘s playing fields and hall are used for other activities, and Newbold Verdon Equestrian Centre operates off Barlestone Road. You’ll also find the Newbold Verdon Library along Main Street.
  4. Healthcare: Newbold Verdon Medical Practice offers same-day and pre-bookable appointments alongside a branch surgery in Market Bosworth. The nearest hospital care is in Leicester.

Having a supermarket, a doctor’s surgery and a primary school all within walking distance is useful to know for families weighing up a move to the town, and it’s a factor worth bearing in mind alongside the wider property market here.

Newbold Verdon’s landmarks trace a long history, from a Bishop’s country house to the battle that ended the Plantagenet dynasty a few miles away.

  1. Newbold Verdon Hall – A Grade I listed former country house built around 1700 for Nathaniel Crewe, Bishop of Durham, standing towards the western end of Main Street. It’s now in private use as a farmhouse and isn’t open to the public, but remains one of the town’s defining buildings.
  2. Church of St James – This Grade II listed parish church has origins in the twelfth century, with later rebuilding in 1899. It sits at the western end of Main Street and is still used for worship today.
  3. Cob Cottage – Dating to around 1650, this Grade II listed cottage on Main Street is thought to be the oldest surviving home in the town.
  1. Newbold Verdon War Memorial – Located at the corner of Main Street and Brascote Lane, this granite memorial commemorates those who died in both World Wars.
  2. Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre – Around seven miles away near Sutton Cheney, this Leicestershire County Council heritage site marks the location of the 1485 Battle of Bosworth, where Richard III lost his crown to Henry Tudor.
  3. Battlefield Line Railway – This heritage railway runs from Shackerstone through Market Bosworth to Shenton, close to the Bosworth Battlefield site, with steam and diesel services at weekends.

For buyers, having listed buildings and heritage sites like these close by is often part of what attracts them to the location in the first place.
