Villages & Towns We Cover

Market Bosworth is without doubt one of the most popular places to live in West Leicestershire. There is a fantastic sense of community which is reflected in the rich and varied activities organised in the town.

Market Bosworth is steeped in history and is probably best known for the decisive battle of the Wars of the Roses fought on the 22nd August 1485, when Richard became the last King of England to die on the field of battle. The historic market place, at the centre of the town, is surrounded by interesting speciality shops, cafes and restaurants and hosts a bustling weekly market and a monthly Farmers Market.

There are many beautiful walks around the town which also has a large country park, marina and a water park.

There are numerous independent and state schools close to Market Bosworth, here’s a selection of those you can find.

Nursery Schools

Primary & Secondary Schools

Independent Schools

  • Dixie Grammar School – A co-educational independent school taking children from the ages of 11 to 18.
  • Twycross School, a co-educational independent school for children in the pre-preparatory school from 4 to 8 years and in the main school from 8 to 18 years.

As a small market town away from the rail network, getting around Market Bosworth usually starts with a car, though bus and cycle routes cover the rest.

  • Car & Road: Market Bosworth sits on the B585, which links to the A444 and the A447, allowing access to the M1 near Leicester Forest East. Nuneaton is around nine miles away by road, Hinckley about seven, and Leicester thirteen, each roughly a twenty to twenty five minute drive depending on traffic.
  • Bus: Services connect Market Bosworth directly with Leicester, with buses stopping at locations including Newbold Verdon along the way, while local routes also run to Hinckley and Coalville.
  • Train: Market Bosworth’s own station now runs only as part of the heritage Battlefield Line, so anyone commuting by rail needs to drive to a mainline station. Nuneaton, Hinckley and Atherstone all have regular services and sit within a twenty minute drive, with Nuneaton and Hinckley both offering direct trains to Birmingham, Leicester and Coventry.
  • Cycling & Walking: The Ashby Canal towpath runs close to the town and gives a flat, traffic free route towards Shackerstone and beyond, while country lanes around Barton Road and Sutton Lane are popular with local cyclists. Most of the town itself, including the market square, the schools and the country park, is within a short walk of the surrounding streets.

The road links to Leicester, Nuneaton and the wider motorway network keeps Market Bosworth popular with commuters, helping to support steady demand for larger houses in particular.

Market Bosworth is an exciting place for property, with many historic homes available, which are contrasted by a significant portion of high-end new build homes. Explore what’s typically available below:

Property styles in Market Bosworth: Housing in Market Bosworth runs from seventeenth and eighteenth century cottages around the market square, some with timber frames and thatch that mark them out as genuinely old, through to Georgian townhouses on Park Street and Victorian terraces further out.

Newer estates add detached and semi-detached family houses of various sizes, while the villages and open countryside surrounding the town bring in a wider range of period farmhouses and converted barns. A smaller number of true new-build homes have also appeared recently on developments such as Hornsey Rise and King Richard’s Wharf.

Developments in Market Bosworth: Hornsey Rise, a development of nineteen homes by Springbourne Homes in nearby Wellsborough, was completed in 2021 on the site of a former care home, and won recognition as one of the finest new residences built in Leicestershire that year.

More recently, Owl Homes has begun work on King Richard’s Wharf, a canal side development of two, three, four and five bedroom new-build homes beside the Ashby Canal, within walking distance of the town centre.

Life in Market Bosworth still centres on its market square, with everything from the weekly market to the local pubs and shops within a short walk of most homes in the town.

Shopping: The town’s shops cluster around Main Street and the Market Place, including a Co-op food store for everyday groceries, plus a scattering of independent shops selling antiques, gifts and local produce. A market has run in the square every Wednesday since the thirteenth century, and a farmers’ market adds fresh, local food once a month. For larger supermarkets and retail parks, most people drive the short distance to Hinckley or Nuneaton.

Eating & Drinking: Market Bosworth has kept several of its older pubs, among them Ye Olde Red Lion on Park Street, a sixteenth century building with letting rooms above the bar, and the Dixie Arms Hotel and Old Black Horse Inn nearby. A handful of independent cafes and restaurants around the square cover everything from a quick coffee to a sit down meal.

Local Attractions: There is plenty to see and do in and around Market Bosworth, alongside several historic sites to visit.

  • Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre & Country Park – The heritage centre and country park run guided walks across the battlefield trail, alongside an exhibition covering weapons and armour.
  • Bosworth Hall – Built in the 1680s, this Grade II* listed mansion was the country seat of the Dixie family for close to three hundred years. It’s now a hotel, though its grand staircase and oak panelling remain open to visitors and diners.
  • The Battlefield Line – This heritage steam railway runs from Shackerstone through Market Bosworth to Shenton, close to the battlefield itself. The Battlefield Line operates on selected days throughout the year and gives a scenic way to see the surrounding countryside.
  • The Market Place – Georgian buildings line the square where a market has run every Wednesday since 1285, several now Grade II listed.
  • The Marina –Bosworth Marina which is on the Ashby Canal has moorings for 150 boats and a café on the site.
  • Market Bosworth Country Park – Once the Dixie family’s deer park, this eighty six acre country park – it holds a lake, an arboretum of exotic trees and paths out towards Cadeby and Sutton Cheney.

Leisure & Recreation: Bosworth Water Trust, a fifty acre leisure park on the edge of town, runs sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and fishing on its lake, alongside camping and caravan pitches for visitors. Dixie Grammar School’s playing fields and the town’s own football and cricket clubs add further options for organised sport, and the surrounding footpaths and canal towpaths give plenty of space for walking and running close to home.

Healthcare: Market Bosworth has its own GP surgery and dental practice for everyday needs, with George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton the nearest general hospital for anything more serious.

Events: The Market Bosworth Festival runs series of cultural events including classical concerts, an open art exhibition and outdoor pop concert take place in June each year, However, the organising committee are now extending this to include various events throughout the year.

Sports Clubs: There are multiple sports clubs dotted around Market Bosworth – here’s a few of them:

  1. Market Bosworth Rugby Football Club – Market Bosworth has a thriving rugby club with junior, colts and senior teams playing in various Midland Leagues.
  2. Market Bosworth Tennis Club – Has six courts three of which are floodlit with a number of teams in the Leicestershire Leagues.
  3. Market Bosworth Bowls Club – Attractive green in the centre of Market Bosworth.
  4. Market Bosworth Football Club – Has a number of junior teams for younger players to join.
  5. The Bosworth Blazers – Basketball Club with two teams playing in the Leicestershire League.

Fox Country Properties don’t just operate in Market Bosworth, we also cover house sales across the villages orbiting the town, from small farming parishes to some of South Leicestershire’s more sought-after rural addresses.

  • Bagworth: Bagworth grew up around the coal industry that once shaped this part of Leicestershire. A statue of a miner still marks that history in the village, and Bagworth Heath Woods, laid out on the site of the former Desford Colliery, gives people living here walking paths straight from the village itself.
  • Nailstone: Nailstone sits around three miles northeast of Market Bosworth and became a conservation village in 2015. Once part of the Gopsall Estate, it still has its own pub and a primary school shared with neighbouring Bagworth, alongside a history that includes a visit from Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745.
  • Congerstone: Congerstone sits beside the Ashby Canal and traces back to the Domesday Book, where it was recorded as Cuningestone. St Mary the Virgin, its parish church, dates from the thirteenth century and still stands at the centre of the village.
  • Barlestone: A short drive from Market Bosworth, Barlestone centres on a well regarded Church of England primary school and a green area with large sports grounds. Its size and its closeness to the town make it a common first move for families wanting high-quality schooling without travelling far.
  • Carlton: Carlton is a small parish on the Ashby Canal with a population of around three hundred. St Andrew’s Church and the Gate Hangs Well pub, named after an old turnpike gate that once stood nearby, sit at the heart of a genuinely rural setting.
  • Sheepy Magna: In west Leicestershire near the Warwickshire border, a short drive from Market Bosworth, Sheepy Magna sits on the River Sence and keeps a good number of eighteenth and nineteenth century buildings within a tightly drawn village boundary. All Saints Church holds Grade II* listed status, and the Black Horse remains the village pub.
  • Shackerstone: Shackerstone is the headquarters of the Battlefield Line, the heritage railway that still runs steam trains through to Shenton. The Ashby Canal loops around the village, and the annual Shackerstone Festival each September brings the canal, the railway and the village together for a weekend of events.
  • Kirkby Mallory: Around four miles southeast of Market Bosworth, Kirkby Mallory is best known today for Mallory Park, its motor racing circuit. The village grew up around Kirkby Hall, a seventeenth century seat of the Noel family.
  • Peckleton: Just over four miles southeast of Market Bosworth, Peckleton’s stream once powered a village watermill, and its fields once hosted early test flights that grew into what became Leicestershire’s first aerodrome at nearby Desford. Peckleton Hall, a Grade II listed building, and St Mary Magdalene Church remain at the centre of the village.
  • Sibson: Around four miles southwest of Market Bosworth, Sibson sits close to Watling Street and the Warwickshire border. Its parish church of St Botolph holds Grade II* listed status, and the hamlet of Wellsborough within the same rural stretch is home to Hornsey Rise, one of the newer developments Fox Country Properties has sold homes on.
  • Cadeby: Cadeby is a small conservation village best known locally for its former rector, Teddy Boston, the inspiration for the Fat Clergyman in the Thomas the Tank Engine books, who built his own light railway in the rectory garden. All Saints Church still holds its fete every August.
