Local Landmarks

Desford is a small town and civil parish in the Hinckley and Bosworth district of Leicestershire, sitting on a low rise about seven miles west of Leicester.

The name goes back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as Diresford, thought to mean Deor’s Ford after an early Anglo-Saxon settler. For centuries the parish belonged to the Earls of Leicester, later Dukes of Lancaster, and when their titles passed to the Crown in 1399 the reigning monarch became patron of the parish church, a role the King still holds today.

The Leicester and Swannington Railway arrived in 1832, one of the earliest railway lines built anywhere, and the larger houses along Station Road were put up for Leicester commuters not long after. Coal mining followed at Desford Colliery, which employed generations of local families until it closed in 1984.

The oldest part of the village, taking in the High Street, Church Lane and Main Street, was designated a conservation area by Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council in 1981, and the timber framed Old Manor House and the spire of St Martin’s Church still mark out this older core. Further out, Desford looks more like nearby Newbold Verdon or Kirby Muxloe, with housing dating from the mid-20th century onward filling in around the historic centre. Bosworth Academy is the local secondary school and sits on the edge of the village, and families make up a large part of who lives here.

What sets Desford apart from surrounding villages is its position on the edge of Leicester’s commuter belt – close enough for a short run into the city but still surrounded by open farmland. That has kept demand steady among buyers who want a rural setting without giving up a working link to Leicester, a factor behind continued interest in both the village’s older housing stock and its newer builds.

Desford sits on the western edge of Leicester’s commuter area, and getting around, whether by car, bus or rail, is straightforward for a town of its size.

  • Car & Road: Desford lies just off the B582 (close to a junction of the M1), which links north to Leicester and Nottingham and south towards Coventry. The A47 runs through nearby Kirby Muxloe and Leicester Forest East, connecting Desford with Leicester city centre in around 20 minutes by car and with Hinckley and Earl Shilton to the south west. Leicester itself is roughly 8 miles away by road.
  • Bus: Services run from Manor Road through Kirby Muxloe to Leicester’s St Margaret’s bus station, taking around 40 mins.
  • Train: Desford had its own railway station on the Leicester and Swannington line until 1964, but today the nearest station is Leicester, about 8 miles away. From there, trains run to London St Pancras in just over an hour, alongside other services to Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield.
  • Cycling and walking: Desford’s High Street, Main Street and Church Lane are easy to cover on foot, and quiet lanes lead to Kirby Muxloe, Newbold Verdon and Ratby for those cycling further out.

The nearest airport is East Midlands Airport, roughly 20 miles north of the village.

The plentiful road and rail options are a pull for homebuyers who want to commute to Leicester, and the town also supports steady demand for family housing.

Desford is an historic village, and therefore contains many rarer, historical properties (alongside newer homes too). Explore what’s on offer below:

Property styles in Desford: The oldest part of the village, still built around the High Street and Church Lane, includes thatched houses and buildings like the Grade II* listed Old Manor House, alongside brick cottages that trace back to Desford’s days as a farming and knitting village.

Station Road holds a run of larger Victorian houses and newer properties, some of which were put up for Leicester commuters once the railway arrived in 1832. Away from the historic core, the small town is made up mostly of semi-detached and detached homes built from the mid-20th century onward, and Desford also has a steady supply of new build homes on plots such as Lindridge Lane and Peckleton Lane.

Development in Desford: One welcome addition to the town centre is a new community food store on the High Street. It exists within the conservation area, and was built around part of a timber framed building thought to date from the late 17th century.

New build activity in Desford continues modestly, with individual executive homes regularly coming forward for sale alongside the village’s established housing stock. Anyone considering a new build purchase or a plot in Desford should explore the availability of new homes on our website.

Desford might be a commuter village, but day-to-day life still runs at small-town pace, with most everyday needs covered on the High Street and Main Street.

Shopping: The High Street is home to a Co-op food store, opened inside part of a timber framed building within Desford’s conservation area. There’s a further convenience store and Post Office on St Martins Drive. For anything beyond everyday groceries, Leicester’s larger shopping centres are a only a short drive away.

Eating & Drinking: The Blue Bell on the High Street has served Desford since at least 1841 and is the last surviving pub within the old town core, while the Lancaster Arms, near the site of the former railway station on Station Road, dates from around 1860. In the hamlet of Botcheston, a short distance from the village, the Greyhound is a further long standing pub, converted from farm cottages in 1856.

Leisure & Recreation: Sport in Desford, a charity based sports club on Peckleton Lane, runs football, tennis, squash, bowls and gym facilities for the wider area, and Desford Football Club plays its home matches there. Desford Community Library on Main Street serves the township and its surrounding parishes.

Healthcare: Desford Medical Centre is the village’s NHS practice, serving Desford and a number of neighbouring villages, and there’s a dental practice just off Manor Road. For anything requiring a hospital, Leicester’s main hospitals are within a short drive.

The spread of everyday shops, pubs and sports facilities within walking distance of the town centre is one of the reasons families keep looking at Desford when they’re searching for a home outside Leicester.

Desford’s landmarks reflects its past as a farming town that grew up around its church and manor house, with a handful of sites nearby which reflect this history.

  • Church of St Martin – Late 13th and 14th century in origin and restored in 1884, this Grade II* listed parish church stands on Church Lane and has been under royal patronage since 1399, when the manor of Desford passed to the Crown.
  • Old Manor House – Dating from around 1600, the timber framed Old Manor House on High Street is Grade II* listed and remains one of the best preserved buildings from Desford’s early history.
  • Desford Conservation Area – Covering the High Street, Church Lane and Main Street, this part of the town was designated by Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council in 1981 to protect its older buildings.
  • Tropical Birdland – Set in over six acres on Lindridge Lane, Tropical Birdland is home to over 250 birds and remains Desford’s best known visitor attraction.
  • Kirby Muxloe Castle – A short drive away in Kirby Muxloe, this unfinished fortified manor house was begun in 1480 for Lord Hastings and is now cared for by English Heritage.
  • Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre – A little further west near Market Bosworth, the site of the 1485 battle that ended the Wars of the Roses is now run as a heritage centre by Leicestershire County Council.
