The village originated as 3 villages that can be dated back to the Saxon era: Broctone, Sutone and Torp, that became Broughton, Sutton and Primethrope. The second half of the villages name, Astley, was take from the Lord of the manor of Broughton in the 13th century. The village was recorded as having 200 residents in the doomsday book of 1086, by 1800 this was 450, the population then explodes to 1200 by 1900. This population expansion was due to the development of local industry and currently the number is closer to 9500.
